Starting 3d design (tell me what you think.

Post by GamingGeek on Wed Jul 22, 2015 12:43 pm

Hey guys, this website and game idea really got me into 3d design  so I got blender and started dabbling with it.  So anyways if anyone has any suggestions for how to get better  please let me know.  Also I made a weapon  that I thought was pretty neat on blender, tell me what you think.

very nice model, but may i ask how many polys is it? try to find the sweet spot for thsi model, where you can see all the curves, but try and keep your models for games low poly!

No doubt you've noticed that your software covers your model in triangles. These are polys (polygons) the higher poly increase the strain it puts on someone's pc. Basically the more detail the higher poly and therefore lowers frame rate.

Is this weapon better then since there are less items in it.

I think I like this one better so I hope it works better.

May I ask what you are using for 3d-molding?

Blender I think (see first post).

As a beginner, a little question for the modelers out there Smile : what level of detail should we aim to reach in order to be in the "sweet spot" ? I plan to start modeling with some creatures or weapons but I have no idea of the requirements quality wise . Thanks in advance

I also started using Blender recently(week or so ago) and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on UV mapping and texturing. I've got the modelling down but I'm not that great at texturing them using UV maps

Ereselpe:
Not sure to understand your question..? ^^'

Ampersand:
Ever made some papercraft? UV mapping is the exact same thing but the other way around. You probably done geometry unwrapping in some math class.

In Blender, you decide where your model cut by selecting the edges in edit mode and press Ctrl+E and click Mark Seam. Knowing where to mark the seams come from experience hard to teach.

Once you mark seams, hit U and select Unwrap (you can try other options as well but unwrap work well if seams are good)
Your UV will appear in the Image Editor, you need that tab open. UVs are coordinate on an image. Size of the image doesn't matter, but good UV usually take as much space as possible on the template so there is not data waste.

Once you've done your UV, you can click "UVs" in image editor and click Export UV layout.
This will give you a png transparent image of your UVs, you can then open it in a image editing software like Photoshop/Gimp/Paint
There you create a new layer for your texture. You simply place image or draw where you want it to be on the 3d model.
When you're done with making the texture you save it somewhere. (make sure you hide the UV layer and only save the texture)

Back in Blender, to apply the texture you created to your object you need to create a Material for it. Materials are just a set of property and also hold various textures slots and their influence on object. To add a material, select your object, go to the Material tab (kinda orange shaded sphere), and name it! Good artists name their stuff! for example: Sword_001_MAT

Now you have material, you can add texture. Click the icon next to material with red/white squares. This is where you put textures. Simply click "New". Then click "Open" under Image section and find your image.

It should work now ^^ Sorry for the very lenghty text based explanation, if you have questions I'm always glad to help. Wink

Thanks, think I kinda already half knew that but thanks for the confirmation. One other thing, how do I make the texture show up in the rendering because presently the material shows up instead
